Come spend two days photographing Saint Augustine with Patricia in a small group of just eight photographers. Her carefully curated path through the city combines its extraordinary story with the curiosity of seeing it through a photographer’s eye.

Together, we’ll explore historic streets, follow the changing light, discover the stories behind the places we photograph, and notice things we might otherwise have passed. As daylight gives way to evening, familiar places take on an entirely different character and new photographic possibilities begin to appear.

Patricia will photograph alongside you, sharing how she approaches a scene, helping you explore different viewpoints, and offering personal guidance as you create photographs that hold the memories and discoveries of your time in America’s oldest city—images you’ll be proud to share.

Stay in the Heart of Historic Saint Augustine

 

The St. George Inn is a locally owned boutique hotel at the north end of pedestrian-only St. George Street. Its six buildings surround two courtyards, with guest rooms above local businesses and some balconies overlooking the Castillo de San Marcos, the Old City Gate, and the Historic District.

 

The St. George Inn makes the entire trip part of the experience. 

 

Our first group gathering will take place at the Inn, and when it is time to head out and photograph, we can simply walk out the door with our cameras.

 

Between workshop sessions, you and any traveling companions — can explore Saint Augustine’s restaurants, shops, courtyards, bayfront, and history all within easy walking distance.

With only eight explorers, there is time for questions, individual help, demonstrations, conversation, and working through a scene together when you need it. History, architecture, changing light, and unexpected discoveries give us something new to photograph around every corner.

It is a simple question, but it can completely change what happens next. Instead of simply photographing what is in front of you, you begin thinking about what caught your attention and what you want the photograph to say.

    You’ll see how Patricia approaches a scene, showing what catches her eye, how the light and visual elements work together, and the choices she makes before taking the photograph.

    As we walk, Saint Augustine becomes more than a collection of places to photograph—it becomes a visual canvas. Some scenes immediately catch your attention; others are waiting to be discovered.

    Each stop becomes an opportunity to look a little closer, explore what interests you, and discover how your camera can do more than document where you traveled.

  • The History Behind the City

    The stories built into the streets the architecture, and the details you photograph add another layer to what you see, often suggesting a new way to approach the photograph. 

  • Changing Light

    Photograph as Saint Augustine moves through changing afternoon light, twilight, and blue hour—with Patricia knowing where to be as the light changes.

  • Just Eight Explorers

    A small group gives us the freedom to move easily through the city, share discoveries, exchange ideas, and make room for individual attention without losing the pleasure of exploring together.

  • Bringing It All Together

    Take the photograph from capture to completion. Patricia will demonstrate powerful Snapseed tools that can refine an image, bring out its best qualities, or take it in a more creative direction. You’ll see how even advanced edits can be surprisingly easy to make and receive her Snapseed Editing Guide to continue exploring on your own.

Places I Can't Wait to Share

 

 

Walking down Avilés Street—often called the oldest street in America—can feel a little like walking in Europe. Its brick paving, coquina walls, courtyards, gates, and architectural details give us something different to discover and photograph every few steps.

 

We also have specially arranged access to photograph inside the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum—an opportunity I’m especially excited to share. In the seven years I lived and guided in Saint Augustine, I never knew of a photography group being given this kind of access.

Built in 1798, the house is presented as it would have appeared during its years as a nineteenth-century boarding house. After a brief introduction to its history, we’ll have the freedom to explore the rooms with our cameras, photographing original furnishings, period details, textures, architecture, and beautiful window light.

 

Late in the day, we’ll turn our attention to Saint Augustine’s Gilded Age architecture. Sunset can be a photographer’s delight—or a curse—when you don’t know where to be as the light begins to change. Patricia removes the guesswork about timing and location.

 

The Spanish Baroque façades are striking in the evening light. Along the Venetian Romanesque arches, the changing light reveals something the architects understood when they designed them: light would become part of the architecture.

 

Patricia knows where the long shadows can strengthen a photograph and which viewpoints come alive as the city moves into blue hour. It’s a fast-paced, visually exciting conclusion to our first day.

Attendance is limited to eight participants so that everyone receives individual instruction and personal guidance.
